A man infamously known as the ‘Malibu Sniper’ for a series of attacks at Malibu Park in 2018, has been convicted of battering a physician while serving his sentence at Kern Valley State Prison.
A Kern County jury found Inmate Anthony Rauda guilty of one felony count of battery by an inmate on a non-inmate.
In a separate proceeding, the same jury found it true that Rauda had served a prior term in state prison, that he had numerous criminal convictions, and that he had previously been convicted of one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder in Los Angeles County.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Steven Barile.
On September 11, 2024, Rauda attacked a doctor at the prison after being evaluated for a medical accommodation. When Rauda was told that he did not meet the prison's criteria to be given the accommodation, Rauda became angry. When the doctor began to walk back to his office, Rauda attacked the doctor, striking him in the back of the head. Correctional Officers intervened and detained Rauda. The doctor suffered minor injuries to his neck and right ear.
Rauda’s violent history includes the deadly attack at Malibu Park in where he shot motorists and campers, leading to the death of a man who was sleeping in a tent next to his two daughters ages four and two. He was sentenced in Los Angeles County on June 7, 2023 to 119 years to life in prison. DA Zimmer commented; “Kern County prisons house some of the most violent and dangerous offenders in the state. When inmates commit new crimes while incarcerated, those offenses must be prosecuted with the same diligence as crimes committed in our communities. Accountability remains essential and this office is committed to prioritizing public safety by ensuring that repeat offenders receive appropriate sentences for their crimes.”
Sentencing is scheduled for June 15, 2026. As three strike offender, Rauda is facing an additional 25 years to life in prison.
