California's gasoline tax will increase 2.2 cents per gallon on July 1, 2026.
Here's what changes: Gasoline tax: 61.2¢ → 63.4¢ per gallon Diesel tax: 46.6¢ → 48.2¢ per gallon
The increase is an automatic annual inflation adjustment under state law (SB 1), with the revenue designated for road and transportation projects.
For most drivers, the tax increase alone adds about: 30¢ to fill a 15-gallon tank.
Pump prices can still fluctuate more than that due to crude oil prices, refinery operations, and supply and demand
