Sheriff's Rural Crimes Task Force Investigates Assault After Shots Were Fired at BNSF Police Officer

VICTIM(S): Burlington North Santa Fe (BNSF) Officer
SUMMARY:
On Monday, August 10, 2026, at about 6:04 p.m., deputies from San Bernardino County and officers from the California Highway Patrol, responded to assist BNSF Railway Police following a report of shots fired near Cajon Boulevard and Keenbrook Road.
BNSF officers encountered individuals suspected of burglarizing rail cars and officers attempted to deter the activity. During the incident, a suspect fired a handgun in the direction of a BNSF officer. The officer was not struck or injured.
The train continued northbound before eventually stopping in the Summit Valley area. Deputies and BNSF officers established a perimeter around the train and, with assistance from Sheriff’s Aviation, and personnel from the Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division (SED), conducted a search of rail cars believed to have been entered.
No suspects were located during the search. Several vehicles and individuals encountered in the surrounding area were investigated and determined to be unrelated to the incident.
No deputies or BNSF officers were injured. The investigation is ongoing and the Sheriff’s Rural Crimes Task Force has assumed the investigation.
