A 12-mile segment of Angeles Forest Highway will be closed during non-commuting hours for four weeks starting Monday to perform repairs and maintenance.
Electronic signs announcing the closures have been in place beside Angeles Forest Highway since May 21.
Angeles Forest Highway will be closed 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 1 to June 26 from Mount Emma Road to Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road. Access will be maintained for residents, camps and emergency vehicles.
Los Angeles County Public Works officials said this closure will allow for road maintenance work to be completed much safer and more efficiently. Commuters drive fast on this narrow and curvy mountain road. Closing the road will lessen the risk to workers and heaving-equipment operators and to drivers by preventing coming in contact with road work and large equipment. In addition, it will enhance efficiency; the alternative to closure is to use traffic control, which would take at least twice as long to complete.
Scope of work: Vegetation control, guardrail repairs, shoulder grading, drain maintenance, slope mowing. All these will benefit and enhance public safety for drivers and the surrounding communities.
Closure Dates: June 1 to June 26.
Closure Schedule: Monday through Friday, no closure on weekends. Closure hours will be limited to non-peak hours from 9 am to 2 pm.
Access: Public Works crews will ensure that forest camps, residents, U.S. Forest Service personnel, and emergency vehicles are granted access as needed
Last year, the same section was closed, from mid-May to the end of June, during non-commuting hours to complete similar work with much success and minimal traffic impacts.
